A critical socioanalysis of trends/ architecture/ societal phenomena from a Substacker living in Asia, Singapore with occasional takes on culture, book reviews and food. Thank you.
That's so interesting! I didn't know that about German students! Yes, it would be such an insightful deep-dive topic! There's a lot of scholarly articles on the uniform but perhaps they are mostly on the same thread? Didn't take a closer look. Ciao ciao! XO
This is interesting. In the UK, school uniforms are mandatory as well. I don't view the UK as a collectivist society though. Individual rights and liberties hold precedence. Maybe the British are the exception to the rule?!
It's funny because, despite having to wear uniforms in school, I find that the British embrace individualism (regarding fashion) more openly than in other European countries where uniform policies are not implemented... I am not British. I went to school in Germany and even though German students don't wear uniforms, the way they dress is still very 'uniformed'. They all look alike 🙈 British teens dress more boldly and have fun with clothing in their free time probably because they're stuck in uniforms during the week and appreciate the opportunities when they can express themselves with what they wear...
I think the Japanese are quite fashion-forward when they're not in school or work settings as well...

True! I am glad that there's more liberty in the U.K hopefully!
I am not sure! I don't like to overthink it. ^^ so probably a lot of other factors to consider! ~
The inspiration for this post came from seeing a Japanese job hunting photo of graduates.
Feel wearing a uniform is a little dulling on the senses, especially for school.
Imagine a society where every group wears a uniform to signal what role you play , sth akin to the society in Lois Lowry's The Giver.
But many take pride in it too like the UK public school uniform?
Thank you!
